Garfield has a diverse heritage, including English and Polish Jewish roots.

Garfield attended the City of London Freemen's School in Ashtead, where he initially showed interest in gymnastics and swimming. His passion for acting emerged at the age of 16 when a friend encouraged him to join a theater class. He later honed his craft at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, graduating in 2004.
